Bullet Journaling for Beginners: 10 Easy Tips to Get You Started

When I first discovered bullet journaling, I spent hours scrolling Pinterest, saving photos of stunning spreads with perfect lettering and watercolour accents. They were beautiful... but also completely intimidating. I didn’t even know where to start!

If that sounds familiar, take a deep breath. You don’t need an elaborate setup or a drawer full of pens to begin. The magic of bullet journaling is how simple it can be - and how much it adapts to you.

Here are ten beginner-friendly tips to help you start your bullet journaling journey without the overwhelm.

1. Start with one notebook

You don’t need the “perfect” notebook to get started. Any notebook you already have will work just fine. Once you’ve used it for a while, you’ll start to notice what you prefer: dot grid, lined, blank, or even a specific paper weight or size.

The key is to begin. You can always upgrade later once you know what you love.

2. Use a minimal amount of tools at first

There’s no need to buy every pen, marker, and ruler right away. A notebook and one or two pens are truly enough. Starting simple helps you focus on the system itself — not the supplies.

If you’re curious about what tools I personally use (and which ones I don’t!), I shared everything in my post: My Favourite Tools for Bullet Journaling: A Beginner-Friendly Guide.

3. Begin with the basics

Start with the classic bullet journal foundation: an index, a future log, and your monthly and weekly spreads. These pages form the backbone of the system and help you build a rhythm that feels natural.

You can always add more (mood trackers, project lists, or reading logs) once you’ve found your flow.

4. Keep your spreads simple

Beautiful pages are lovely, but your journal doesn’t need to look “Pinterest-perfect.” In fact, the simpler your spreads, the easier they are to use.

Clean layouts give your mind space to breathe... and make it more likely you’ll actually keep up with your journal.

5. Add decorations after you plan

If you love doodling or hand-lettering, decorate after you’ve set up your structure. Think of it as your creative reward once your planning is done.

That way, you stay productive and creative without letting perfectionism slow you down.

6. Don’t be afraid to experiment

One of the best parts of bullet journaling is how flexible it is. Try a new layout each month, change up your weekly format, or swap your headers for banners. There’s no wrong way to do it - only what works best for you.

And if you’d like a little structure to help you start experimenting, you can download my free Whimsy Weekly Bullet Journal Starter Kit. It includes a ready-to-use layout and decorative elements to play with!

7. Use your own visual system of symbols and icons

Create a set of symbols that make sense to you. For example, dots for tasks, stars for priorities, arrows for things that move to next week, or little doodles that only you understand.

Your system doesn’t have to follow anyone else’s rules. The goal is to make your pages easy to scan at a glance... for you.

8. Don’t compare your journal to others’

This one’s big, but believe me: "comparison really is the thief of joy".

Everyone’s journal reflects their own needs and personality. Some are minimalist, others are bursting with colour.

Yours doesn’t have to be Instagram-ready: it just has to work for you. The best journal is the one you actually use.

9. Add a self-care or gratitude section

Even a small space for reflection (a daily gratitude list, mood check-in, or “tiny victories” log) can transform your bullet journal from a productivity tool into a calm little corner of your day.

These pages remind you that organisation and kindness can absolutely go hand in hand.

10. Remember: it’s supposed to help, not stress you out

If your journal starts feeling like a chore, simplify it. You can skip a day, leave a page half-empty, or redesign your layout completely.

Your bullet journal is there to serve you, not the other way around. Let it evolve as your needs change: that’s where the real magic happens!

A gentle nudge to begin

Bullet journaling is a practice, one that grows and changes with you.

Start small, stay curious, and let your pages unfold naturally.

You’ll be amazed at how even the simplest setup can help you feel more organised, creative, and calm!
